Daily Wins

A habit tracker with streaks that survive real life

Streaks are motivating right up until you break one. Daily Wins keeps the motivation and removes the cliff: one small win keeps the flame going, and a free weekly Streak Freeze covers the day that falls apart.

The streak paradox

A streak is one of the simplest motivators ever invented: a number that goes up when you show up. It works because losing it feels bad. That same feeling is the problem. The day the number resets to zero, a lot of people don't restart at one. They stop.

Researchers have studied this directly. In a set of experiments on streaks, Silverman and Barasch (2023) found that people were less likely to keep going with an activity after a streak broke, even when the break says nothing about their ability. The streak had become the reason, and when it vanished, so did the reason.

Daily Wins is designed around that finding. You still get the pull of a growing streak, but a single missed day doesn't erase weeks of effort.

How streaks work in Daily Wins

One small win keeps it alive

Your Today screen has three kinds of items: your habits, the steps of your main win, and a 2-minute insight. Doing any one of them keeps your streak alive. Filling the whole Win Meter wins the day, with confetti, sound and haptics. The bar for "I showed up" is deliberately low, and the bar for "I won the day" is the plan you set that morning.

The flame grows

Instead of a bare number, your streak is a flame that grows through four stages: Spark, Flame, Blaze and Inferno. It's a small thing, but watching something grow is more motivating than watching a counter you're afraid of resetting.

A Streak Freeze covers a day that doesn't go to plan. Streak Repair brings back a streak that broke anyway. The point isn't to cheat. It's to stop a single bad day (a flight, a sick kid, a migraine) from turning into the end of the habit.

Weekly targets: the other half of a forgiving streak

Not every habit should be daily. Daily Wins lets you set a weekly target from one to seven days for each habit. "Read 3 days a week" is a perfectly good habit, and it means Tuesday off isn't a failure. Your history lives in the Progress tab, with a streak calendar that shows the pattern rather than just the latest number.

A useful rule: set the target you'd hit in a bad week, then let good weeks beat it. A target you hit 90% of the time builds confidence. One you hit 40% of the time builds guilt.

What the research says about missing a day

The best-known study of real-world habit formation (Lally et al., 2010) followed people as they repeated a new daily behavior in the same context. Two findings matter for streaks:

  1. Habits took a long and variable time to become automatic: a median of about 66 days, with individual results ranging from 18 to 254 days. We unpack that in how long it takes to form a habit.
  2. Missing a single opportunity didn't materially affect the process. What mattered was getting back to it.

In other words, the habit doesn't care about the streak. You do. A forgiving streak keeps you coming back long enough for the habit to form.

How to protect a streak on a hard day

  1. Do the check-in anyway. Rate your energy honestly. On a low day the plan gets lighter.
  2. Pick the smallest item. One page, one glass of water, one step of your main win. That keeps the flame alive. Our low-energy day plan has more ideas.
  3. Use the widget. Checking off a habit from the Home Screen takes two seconds. See the widget setup.
  4. Let the Freeze do its job. If today is truly gone, that's what the weekly Streak Freeze is for. Use it without guilt and go to bed.

When a streak becomes unhelpful

If you notice a streak making you anxious, or you're doing a habit only to protect the number, change the target. Switch a daily habit to four days a week, or take a planned break. The streak exists to serve the habit, not the other way round. Daily Wins is a productivity tool; if pressure around habits is affecting your wellbeing, it's worth talking to someone you trust or a professional.

Questions

What is a streak freeze?

A Streak Freeze covers a day you miss so your streak does not reset. Everyone gets one free Streak Freeze a week in Daily Wins. Premium includes 3 a week plus Streak Repair.

Do streaks actually help build habits?

They can help you show up, because nobody likes to break a chain. The risk is what happens after a break: research on streaks found people are less likely to continue an activity once a streak ends. That is why Daily Wins makes streaks hard to lose by accident.

What counts toward my streak?

Doing one thing on your Today screen keeps your streak alive: a habit, a step of your main win, or your daily insight. Filling the whole Win Meter wins the day.

What are the flame stages?

Your flame grows from Spark to Flame to Blaze to Inferno as your streak climbs. Premium also includes flame skins.
